The How-To | Five Chic Ways To Elevate Your Activewear

Tastemakers Rozalia Russian and Elliott Garnaut reveal their top tips for nailing sports luxe style.

The fourth? Luxe. At all times.

Luckily, it only takes a few subtle styling tricks to elevate an 'everyday’ athleisure outfit.

Here, we speak to tastemakers Rozalia Russian and Elliott Garnaut—who’ve previously led styling masterclasses at our Melbourne Doncaster and Highpoint stores—to get their tips for taking your active look to the next level.

1. START WITH STAPLES

Think of these as the building blocks of your activewear wardrobe. In other words: three to five essentials you can mix, match and move in to form the base of many looks.

Not sure where to start? Rozalia recommends incorporating at least one layering piece and a pared-back crop top that will go with everything.

“A lightweight shirt or ‘shacket’ is a great wardrobe essential to keep on hand,” she says.

“Plus, a classic black sports bra can work into any outfit.”


2. FOCUS ON ONE FEATURE

Curating your outfit around a single feature item is an easy way to ensure a streamlined finish.

“Focus your outfit around one key element instead of multiple items that bring attention to the eye. We want 'fashionable', not 'circus'!” says Elliot.

To start, keep it simple and opt for a colorful tank pared back with neutral layers, or let logo accents lead in a monochrome look.


3. BASE ON BLOCK COLORS

For a relaxed look that you can wear on repeat, build your outfit around block color basics—then add interest with a hint of print.

“Block colors are great foundations for looks, while patterns are great as accents,” Elliot explains.

Need to get used to playing with prints? Start small with a crop top, then select your larger pieces and accessories in complementing hues to pull your look together.


4. LOOK TO LAYERS

True barbell-to-bar style lies in nailing one key detail: layering.

“Maximize your outfit with layers to create a more fashion-focused look,” says Rozalia, who recommends adding some breezy outerwear with to achieve a casual sport luxe look.

Think a transeasonal trench to layer over a matching set, a belted jacket with statement hardware, lightweight puffer jackets and longline windbreaker shirts with subtle logo accents.


5. ADD SOME ACCESSORIES

Round out your athleisure look with functional yet fashion-forward accessories.

“Accessories finish every single outfit. An outfit isn’t an outfit until it is accessorized,” Elliott says.

Whether it’s a minimalist tote, some chunky sandals or a classic cap, the right addition can make all the difference.


THE LAST WORD.

The finishing touch on any outfit? Your attitude. Don’t underestimate the power of walking tall in a look that ‘feels like you’.

“The clothing is only 50% of the look. The other 50% is the confidence you wear it with,” Elliott emphasises.


“Buy things that make you love you,” Rozalia adds.
